About the Area

Located in East Central Georgia, Burke County is about 25 miles south of Augusta and 100 miles north of Savannah. Surrounding counties include Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins, Richmond and Screven. Burke County covers 834 square miles and Waynesboro is the county seat.

It is one of the 13 Georgia counties and five South Carolina Counties making up the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). According to the 2000 Census, the CSRA had a population of 477,441, making it the 87th largest metropolitan area in the nation and second largest in Georgia.

Population
The 2000 census reported that Burke County has a population of 22,243. The City of Waynesboro’s population is 5,813. The city of Sardis has 1,171 residents, Midville 457, Keysville 170 and Girard 227.

Climate
The CSRA boasts a pleasant average temperature of 64 degrees. Consequently, Burke County residents enjoy long, warm summers and mild winters. Rainfall averages 44.49 inches annually and snowfall is rarely recorded.

Transportation
Burke County is centrally located on the new Savannah River Parkway which will connect Savannah and Augusta when completed. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the roadway is substantially complete and is open to traffic. The parkway is being considered for inclusion as part of Interstate 3, which ultimately is planned to run from Savannah to Knoxville.

Commercial air travel is available via Augusta Regiional Airport, 25 minutes from Waynesboro, which is served by the Delta Conection and USAirways Express. Burke County Airport has a lighted runway and is suitable for small, private aircraft and is designed to make it more compatible with today’s aircraft.

Rail service is provided by Norfolk Southern at Waynesboro. Norfolk Southern and CSX piggyback service are available in Savannah. Freight service is provided by interstate and inter/intrastate motor carriers. Continental bus service is provided by Greyhound bus lines.
